The Book Thief Stole My Heart

The Book Thief is beautiful, dark, gritty, and sentimental all at once. The author, Markus Zusak, writes such realistic imagery to the point that you feel as though you are in the story, hiding in the shadows of Himmel Street. If you have not read this brilliant book, here is a small summary:

“It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .
Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.”

I won’t go into much of the plot because that would leave you with nothing to look forward to, but I will say that I cried incredibly hard at the end of the novel. In fact, I have drawn a crude sketch of myself after putting the book down.

me crying

So, that’s a pretty accurate representation. Also, it’s important to note that the scribble on my shirt is actually supposed to be my heart breaking. I know. I’m lame.

The book is just so magnificent. It truly captures the essence of being human and gives it to the reader in such a unique perspective.

The story itself is told from Death’s point of view. He navigates the world, searching for souls that have passed on and he carries them over to the other side.

Every book that has ever made me cry has one simple element: realistic, gritty, storytelling. My favorite books are those that remind me of what it is to be human. I suppose tha it must be the examples of the strong human resilience in the face of adversity that captivates me every single time.

I have been seeing this book on the shelves in bookstores for several years now, and I had never once wanted to buy it. When it was assigned to my contemporary literature class by the most amazing teacher ever, I was so excited to finally read it.

Thank you, Markus Zusak, for writing such a beautifully dark story, and thank you, Ms. Bibb, for assigning such a brilliant book.

Peace, love, and salty tears,

Day one: Research

Ah research..... Did I just spend thirty minutes sifting through pages and pages of brain tumor symptoms? I most certainly did. Don't be alarmed, I don't have a tumor. What I do have is a brand spanking new story to write and barely any knowledge about tumors.
I can officially say that I have learned the difference between malignant and benign tumors and what an encapsulated tumor is. I love story research :) Tumor X-rays? Not so much...
Since I need the information, I can just get over all the gross pictures that pop up on the medical websites. Like bacterial skin infections...*shudder* I could never ever be a dermatologist.
I set the story in Missouri, another place I know relatively nothing about.
This should be an adventure!

The story I need to tell

In the summer before eighth grade, I had an idea for a story. I know, I have ideas all the time, but this one has stayed with me ever since. I fell in love with the characters and the story that they were telling. I'm not sure how it would have ended, I never actually thought that far into it. I do know that one day, I need to get around to rewriting it. The very beginning of it was a prologue that was somewhat lengthy, but overall I think it sets the story up exactly right. So here's what I've been thinking. Since I love the main characters so much, but don't really like the setting and a few other big plot points, I'm going to start it over. I think that it's about time that I finish a story don't you? Unless it's total crap, I'm going to finish this one. As added incentive to finish, I'm making up a deadline and posting the countdown on this blog. That way, I can pretend like I have a time limit that I have to stick to. Also, I will be posting a few excerpts on here, but no lengthy ones. I sort of want to keep this under wraps until I know I'm going to finish it :)

A few changes to the blog

I decided not to put many exerpts at all onto the Novel Project page because when my friends read it, I want it all to be a surprise. Which is why the page will now just be used for news on the progress :) (I'm more than 10% done...haha). And I'm making a new page for my short stories :) Even though I've never finished one of them :) I will though :)
So...that's about it :)

On the bright side :)

My last post wasn't really negative but it wasn't positive either, so I felt like I had to balance it out with this post :)
On the bright side, my novel is coming along great and I hope to have several excerpts up by at least tonight. It's been a few days since I've last written, but that's mainly because I'm waiting to get my mom's opinion on one of the main events in the book :)

A few things about the book: The main character's name is Tawny Dornan. The novel is set in the future in an extremely dystopian society. If you know me, you know that I love a good dystopian story, so it was a no brainer that my favorite story idea so far is a dystopian. :)
That was only two things.. but you'd understand how long it would take me to explain if you read the spiral notebook dedicated to keeping the story flowing :)

So I love you guys and I hope you keep reading!
