Lord of the Flies

Chapter eight and nine in Lord of the Flies really creeped me out. When it comes to books and movies, am I easily scared? Yeah, but something about the talking pig head really disturbed me. Which is why I'm blogging! Because I couldn't sleep. Sure I have a hair appointment in the morning and Kimberlee is coming over in the afternoon, but if I go to sleep right now, I know I'll have nightmares! I was texting Dylan and I guess somehow I misunderstood because I thought I was reading chapter 11, when I was actually reading chapter 8... Now I'm depressed. In all honesty, this book had a great theme, but I hated the way it was written.
When it at last got to something creepy that caught my attention (creepy talking pig head) I thought it was the end of the book. I'm sleepy and reading on my Kindle, it's sort of hard to tell how far I am into a book.
Therefore, now I'm bummed because there's still more of this stupid book to read.
I love books, don't get me wrong, but this book is just ridiculous. The thing with me and summer reading lists is, I hate being told what to read and I hate having a deadline. I know I should just get used to that happening in college and stuff, but man do I hate it.
We also had to read The Hunger Games. Fantastic book. If you haven't read it, you should. I've read it three times now and still find things I didn't quite catch. Since I had already read that book before, I had high expectations for Lord of the Flies.
I understand why people think it's a great book and why it's a classic. It teaches a good lesson and has several very good plot points. Overall, it's not exciting. I'm sorry if a bunch of bratty little boys being stranded on an island isn't my cup of tea. My favorite character was Simon and they killed him off so now I care even less, if that's possible.I'm sure I'll finish tomorrow or the next day...

  1. I want to read Lord of the Flies so badly! I'm actually disappointed in myself for not having read it already. I've been on a banned/challenged books kick lately. I really want to analyze just what about the books made people want them off the shelves. Most likely it's because they make them see some little part of ourselves or our society we don't like, like in Brave New World or The Scarlet Letter. Amazing!
I'm barely familiar with the plot, but I know the theme is that human beings are basically primitive and vulgar regardless of how highly we see ourselves. You should try reading The Island of Dr. Moreau! I loved it, the theme is sort of the same as Frankenstein, but it's a bit more...creepy to say the least. Still one of my favorites!

  2. Haha yeah! I definetly don't think that any book should be banned, especially from students. You're exactly right, though! It's all about the part of us that we don't really want to accept, that's what I really enjoyed about it :) It was just a little too anticlimactic for me :)

  4. I was forced to read LOTF for english class last year. I honestly can't stand the book at all. I hated it, it was awful and the ending really bugged me.
The fact that in english class you have to analyze it could have been a big part in the reason why I hate it.
Kudos! for doing it on your own accord!

  5. There truly is something strange about having to read a book and wanting to read it, isn't there? Funny how it can make you see it differently. The only book I actually finished in English was Brave New World, and I struggled to do so just because it made me incredibly sad :( Just like To Kill a Mockingbird...I made it to the third to last chapter on that one before I had to stop.

  6. I had to read Lord of the Flies freshman year for honors english, and I absolutely didn't like it. To be honest, I didn't completely read the book (stopped after the third chapter) but still...I didn't like it enough to read the rest.

  7. I have read Lord of the Flies and I have to say, I did have to force myself through the first part, but I found it quite gripping in the final chapters. The ending is a bit annoying, but I think it leaves it to the reader's imagination and is quite effective in that sense. Also I don't think they are spoiled, Ralph and Piggy seem like nice lads. Each of the boys in themselves represent a different aspect of human nature, and I find that quite interesting.
I would love to read the hunger games - would there be enough in it to write about for an english essay I'm wondering?

  8. More than enough to write about in an English essay :) I think you're right on all of that, I did love Piggy :)

  9. Harlow, I loved To Kill A Mockingbird, it's one of my all time favorites :)

    E. I think you're pretty awesome because in your thumbnail I think it says Owls and I love it!!! I am almost done with LOTF and I just can't wait to be done!!!

Kendra, if I had a choice, I wouldn't read it at all, but since it's for a huge part of my grade...I guess I have 2 :(
